How to play

Hold the phone in both hands and tap the two circles with your thumbs, left and right, however feels comfortable. That is the whole thing. Rhythumb listens for the rhythm you are already tapping and builds the music around it, so there is no beat to keep up with and no timing to get right.

If you drift, the music thins a little. Settle again and it fills back in. Nothing is ever lost.

Questions people ask

Am I doing it wrong?

You cannot. There is no scoring, no failure and no correct rhythm — the app follows you rather than the other way round. Tapping quickly, slowly, or not at all are all fine.

The music stopped building.

The layers arrive as your tapping settles, and ease out again if it wanders. That is the design rather than a fault. Tapping at a steady pace you find comfortable will bring them back — and there is nothing to recover, because nothing was lost.

Nothing happens when I plug in headphones.

Try tapping once after connecting them. If there is still no sound, check the ringer switch: Rhythumb deliberately respects it, so that silencing your phone silences the app too. This is on purpose — it should never be the app that goes off in a quiet room.

Can I feel the taps but not hear them?

Yes — silence the phone with the ringer switch. The haptics carry on, because a tap should still be felt.

How do I change how it looks?

Tap the small ring of three dots in the top corner. Behind it are the colour pair, how much the scene moves, whether the two circles have a turning surface, and the strength of the sound, light and haptics together. Choices are remembered.

How do I stop?

Tap the moon in the other top corner and Rhythumb will wind down gently. Or simply stop tapping and it will notice. Or close the app — nothing is lost either way, and nothing will nag you to come back.

What happens to my recording?

It is deleted unless you choose to keep it, and it never leaves your phone either way. There is more detail on the privacy page.

Why is there no record button?

Because a record button turns a session into a take, and a take can be spoiled. The session simply remembers, and offers at the end.

Accessibility

• Reduce Motion is honoured: the scene stops drifting, and the changes cross-fade in place instead of moving.
• Reduce Transparency is honoured in the settings panel.
• VoiceOver can read every control, and the play surface passes your touches straight through so the game itself can be played.
• Still, in settings, stops the ambient movement entirely while keeping everything the music does, and Smooth stops the two circles turning.
• Strength scales the haptics along with the sound and the light, for anyone who finds the default too strong or too faint.

If something is unusable for you, please tell us — that is a fault worth fixing quickly.

Requirements

Rhythumb runs on iPhone with iOS 18 or later. It works entirely offline.
